Our Brief

We were tasked by the Client to realise their vision of making Bournemouth Highcliff Marriott Hotel, the flagship venue in the seaside town through a unique design which would set the hotel apart from the wider Marriott portfolio, while matching its quality.

The hotel’s location and facilities make it the perfect setting for a summer getaway. The intention is to cater to the leisure market, so designs needed to be locally informed and lifestyle focused, ready to wow the guests. The hotel must exceed guest expectations in style and substance. The project scope; a hard refurbishment of 141 bedrooms and bathrooms, creation of seven new keys through the repurposing of unused areas in the hotel, and softer changes across the bedroom corridors.

Our Approach

On this occasion the Team had the opportunity to visit the hotel in the height of summer to see it in all its glory. It was a great chance to also research the local area to find material for the Design Narrative which in turn would form the foundation of the design and make it locally relevant.

The hotel is set on a magnificent cliff top overlooking the shoreline. We took the design approach of blurring the lines between the outside environment and the hotel interior creating a fresh, contemporary design which brings the outside in making the guest feel part of the location.

The Results

The corridors are decorated in a muted colour palette mixed with natural textures. The lighting has been carefully designed to enhance the feeling of light and shade which combined with the decoration give the guest the feeling of walking through the local gardens lined with mature pines.

The guestrooms are light and fresh. Bespoke carpets feel like an extension of the beach while the casegoods and furniture all incorporate small details from the shoreline. Driftwood inspired timber textures and paint finishes inspired by the local beach huts all sit in harmony to create a unique guestroom which puts the guest at the centre of the location.
